SENIORS: NORTH SUNSHINE EAGLES: 4 v GEORGE CROSS FC: 2
The cards certainly did not fall in the Georgies favour after our gallant team went down 4-2 at Larissa Reserve on Saturday. Following a turbulent week that saw a coaching change and the loss of several players, our team found themselves on the back foot after only 4 minutes. An attempted clearance struck the back of Charlie Bailey’s foot and the ball flew past Ryan Gauci out-stretched hands to give the home team an early lead. The North Sunshine Eagles made it 2-0 from the penalty-spot when George Tsiakalakis was harshly judged to have handled the ball in the penalty area. Despite the pleas from every George Cross player the referee was adamant it was intentional hand-ball and pointed to the spot. The Eagles looked dangerous going forward, but to their credit, our defence gave ample cover to Ryan Gauci’s goal. George Cross was back into the game following some good interplay that saw the ball delivered to newcomer George Stefendorfas who blasted the ball home just before the break. A goal down at the break gave every supporter at the ground hope of a comeback, but after a promising start to the second half the home team was once again shooting from the penalty-spot in the 50th minute. The shot was duly converted despite Ryan’s best effort to stop the shot. Francesco Stella revived our team’s chances in the 60th minute when he cleverly lobbed the Eagles keeper from an acute angle to make the score 3-2. The very solid defence of the Eagles was now being put under more pressure by the eager Georgie forwards as they sought an equalising goal. Our supporters thought it had arrived in the 73rd minute when central defender Rayane Frihi scored a sensational scissors-kick goal only to have the goal ruled by the referee for dangerous play. The Eagles scored a 4th goal very late in the game to give them all 3 points, but there was not one George Cross player who cannot be proud of that performance against a very good and settled side like North Sunshine Eagles. As his first match with the club, newly appointed Senior Coach Eric Vasiliadis has a fortnight to get to know the players better before facing Keilor Park FC. Our youngsters consolidated top spot on the league table when they comprehensively defeated second top team North Sunshine Eagles 3-1. All goals were scored during a very open first half with the Georgies racing to a 2-0 lead early in the game. Lewis Merrimen and Clinton Garley took their chances to set the team on the road to victory. The Eagles pulled a goal back midway through the first half, but an opportunist goal from Lewis Merrimen shortly after gave our youngsters a commanding half-time lead. The second half failed to produce any goals, but it was not through lack of trying as our team hit the woodwork and had several goalmouth scrimmages cleared away. The more physical Eagles side had some possession, but never threatened the Georgie goal. The home team failed to get past our young goalkeeper Mayen Mayen from the penalty-spot after a penalty was mysteriously awarded. The Eagles became frustrated and had a player sent off with 15 minutes to go, to all but end any chance of a comeback. There were several outstanding performers in this game, all who showed fierce determination.
